CHAPTER SIX

“TURN around so I can talk to you.”

For a moment Sarah had forgotten that Cesar had to lie on his back and couldn’t move the bottom half of his body.

She rolled to her other side so she was facing him. Above the covers she could see his bare arms and chest with its dusting of hair. Her insides quivered in remembrance of the night they’d spent giving each other pleasure beyond comprehension.

“My family’s coming tomorrow to stay through the weekend. They’ll be arriving some time in the later afternoon.”

Sarah had known it was going to happen, but she was frightened. “Do you wish they weren’t coming this soon?”

“It’s out of my hands.” Over and above his frustration, he sounded resigned.

“Like any mother, she needs to see you with her own eyes and discover that her son is well on the road to a full recovery.”

“What she sees is what it’s going to be from here on,” he bit out. “It’s Johnny that has her sounding happier than I’ve heard her in years. She would have come tonight if I’d given the word.”

“He can’t wait to meet his other grandparents.” She bit her lip. “As they’re your parents, I know they’ll treat me with every courtesy, but I have no illusions about their innermost feelings where I’m concerned.”

He lay there with one hard-muscled arm over his eyes. “At the moment they’re too overjoyed to realize they’re grandparents again to think about anything else.”

It was a lot more than that. Fearing that Cesar would never be able to father a child period, this news had to mean everything to them. A child brought new life. Johnny had brought Cesar back from the edge. They knew he was the reason their son had left the hospital this fast, the reason he had started his therapy.

“W-what can I do to help?”

“You?” His voice mocked. “Nothing.”

His curt response cut her to the quick. “Would you rather I made myself scarce while they’re here?”

“Johnny wouldn’t tolerate it.”

“Of course he would.”

“Lie to anyone but me. You’re his mother. He knows where you are every second of the day and night, and if he doesn’t, he goes to find you. That kind of bond takes years to develop.”

Unshed tears stung her eyelids. “He has loved you since I showed him your picture from the first months of his life. From the beginning not a day has gone by that he hasn’t brought up your name, wanting to know where you are, what race you’re getting ready for. He goes to sleep with his daddy’s name on lips.

“When you picked him up from your hospital bed, he launched himself into your arms with all the love he has in him. In case you’ve forgotten, when it grew tense in the store today he clung to you, not me. I’d be jealous if it were anyone but you.”

A deep sigh escaped his throat. “Was it a normal delivery, or did you have complications?”

She couldn’t keep up with his thoughts. “No complications.
